sensāsana® is a methodical and sensitive approach to yogāsana, emphasizing inner experience to awaken body intelligence. Each and every body is a repository of immense wisdom — stored within our nervous systems. The key to readily accessing this wisdom is through our senses, connecting us with everything we think, do, feel, and are. This practice intimately involves the mind as an active participant in the yoga process, where investigation into the body does not stop at the "what" and "how" of yogāsana, but continues deeper into the "why" — where āsana makes sense.
Michael Bridge-Dickson has been teaching yoga since 2004, following a 10-year career as a classically trained dancer. An articulate communicator with a knack for connecting various aspects of yoga practice, Michael uses his keen eye for detail, methodical view of progressive sequencing, and adaptive prop use to awaken body intelligence. Michael finds that the true joy of teaching is in aiding practitioners to continually find new and sensational ways to safely explore by deepening their understanding of themselves, from body to being.
āsana is never "just" āsana Classes are based on and planned around a theme or set of related themes that are intended to deepen practitioners' understanding of each āsana individually and in relationship with each other. Group classes are multi-level, and almost always utilize props. The practice may include Restorative, Vinyasa, active and semi-active sustained postures, as well as movements from other modalities that facilitate healthy body mechanics. While this approach is an alignment-based practice, it recognizes the "rules" of alignment as being fluid and adaptable to individual structures and needs. Check current class schedule.
āsana that makes sense Deeper study is best done in dedicated workshops. These can be shorter sessions or series, as well as intensives. Some workshop topics include: Accessing the Inaccessible Improving your Teaching skills Restorative Yoga Teacher Training Stretching Safely: Guidelines for Personal Trainers and Fitness Professionals Sanskrit and Chanting: Deepen your practice by unfolding the hidden meanings of Sanskrit terms Yoga and Ayurveda Check for current workshops.
Master your senses Private lessons are a great opportunity to tailor your practice to specific needs with things you can do on your own at home. Private lessons start at $75/hour, and can be done in your home or at a locally rented studio. An advantage to having home lessons is that you will learn how to use equipment you may already have at home (furniture, counters, doorframes, etc) so that you do not need to acquire any additional props. Alternatively, practicing at a well-equipped studio enables you to use equipment you may not have at home. Email to book an appointment: yoga@sensasana.com
Attuning sensitivity Study groups are a fantastic and more feasible opportunity for those who have been studying regularly and may want to go deeper on a regular basis, but for whom group classes do not suffice and private lessons are not appropriate. These groups are created based on common needs and interests. Rates vary depending on venue and number of participants. To organize or join a study group, please email yoga@sensasana.com
Sensational skills Teachers of all levels of skill and experience can use the input of an experienced peer from time to time. Often, there are layers of teacher development that can not be addressed in basic teacher trainings, because to do so requires some on-the-job experience first. But, once you've gained that experience, where do you turn for assistance when you encounter challenges that your Teacher Training didn't and couldn't cover? sensāsana provides continuing education to help you develop and hone your skills. Continuing education is done individually, in small groups, and yoga studios.
